Born in Detroit Micigan, Floyd, his mother Zella Jane (Griffey) Wakefield and his father Floyd Bouck Wakefield moved to Ann Arbor in 1915 where Floyd Bouck Wakefield built a home on
(old) US 23.
Floyd attended Jones elementary school (now Community High) and Ann Arbor High School. While in High School Floyd was a four year letterman and captain of
the track and Cross County teams.
After high school graduation Floyd attended the University of Michigan graduating with a degree in english and literature.
He helped run the Wakefield Shop on Liberty with his mother before joining the U.S. Army where he became a sargent and was released from active duty in late November 1941.
On December 7th, 1941 he was recalled to active duty serving in the pacific until 1945. While fighting in WWII Floyd rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, refused
a battlefield commission, earned his most coveted decoration, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Silver Star, Purple Heart and other combat medals.
Returning to Ann Arbor in 1945, Floyd was employed at the University of Michigan as the Willow Run Airport Manager for the University until retirement in 1971 when
he and His wife Betty moved to Sanibel Island where he lived until he died and where, in a quiet lagoon, his ashes were placed.
